人類如何將學習的經驗轉為記憶儲存一直都是科學界最想解開的謎題。人類擁有高度學習與記憶的能力,使人類祖先能在惡劣的自然環境中生存,進而成為優勢物種。俗話說:”一朝被蛇咬,十年怕草繩就是一個例子。先前被毒蛇咬過而大難不死的人,將毒蛇的樣子與危險訊號兩種訊息關聯在一起並轉變為記憶儲存,下次再看到相似外型的物體,先前儲存的記憶便會被喚起,出現恐懼的感覺進而產生警戒。而這些記憶的形成是由大腦上千億顆神經元共同運作的結果,但確切機制目前仍然未知。我們研究室利用果蠅作為模式生物了解大腦在學習與記憶過程中產生哪些生理變化。果蠅大腦僅有約十三萬顆神經細胞,相較於人腦由將近千億顆神經細胞組成相對簡單。我們利用大腦組織免疫染色搭配共軛焦顯微鏡技術觀察果蠅大腦內神經分子的變化情形,進而了解記憶過程中大腦的分子變化情形。搭配活體大腦鈣離子影像系統研究果蠅大腦在學習前與學習後的神經反應變化情形。另外利用動物行為學分析觀察特定基因突變或特定神經細胞的神經活性改變是否影響果蠅學習與記憶能力。這些實驗結果都將使我們更加了解記憶形成的大腦神經機制。
